This recorded training will include a brief overview of qualitative research (e.g., interviews), distinguishing it from other methods, before diving into the purpose of a codebook and steps to create codes for qualitative research efforts. Participants will have the opportunity to practice creating and applying codes, learn about the importance of inter-coder reliability, and also identify key elements to include in dissemination of qualitative research.

- Describe the purpose of a codebook and the steps to create codes
- Explain differences between the three main types of coding
- Explain how you can examine inter-coder reliability
- Identify 2-3 components that you can include in a write-up of the results of your qualitative research
Instructor
Nikki Weiss, PhD, Research Fellow, University of Minnesota Center for Public Health Systems
Nikki Weiss is a biocultural anthropologist specializing in qualitative research. She completed her undergraduate education in biology at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, and she earned her master’s and doctorate in anthropology from Ohio State University. Before arriving at the University of Minnesota’s Center for Public Health Systems, Nikki worked for the Johns Hopkins Center for Indigenous Health – Great Lakes Hub, as well as for the CDC Foundation. Her research interests include health equity and making health care accessible and attainable for all.
