Full course description

What does access to food look like in your community? What is being done to address it? Not having enough nutrient rich foods can be damaging to anyone but is particularly serious for children's physical and mental health. This 30 minute training, originating in August 2015, explains the impacts of food insecurity on children from a public health perspective. A variety of federal and non-profit programs meant to address the issue of child malnutrition are described. Examples from Michigan are shared, but many of these resources are adapted across the country.

Audience

Public health professionals in health department, community-based, or health care settings who are new to the issue of food insecurity and available programs for children.

Learning Objectives

 Part I: The Impact of Food Insecurity on Children
  • Recognize food insecurity as a public health issue for children in the United States
  • Identify obesity and food insecurity as coexisting issues for children in the United States
Part II: Child Nutrition Programs
  • Identify at least two child nutrition programs available in the United States
